Protocols Explained
Three wireless protocols dominate residential automation. Zigbee uses a mesh network that extends range across dozens of nodes. Z-Wave operates on a sub-GHz band, reducing interference with Wi-Fi. Matter is the newer cross-vendor standard backed by Apple, Google, and Amazon that promises interoperability without a proprietary hub.
In Czech installations, Zigbee has been the practical default for budget-conscious setups due to the wide availability of compatible bulbs and sensors at local electronics retailers.

Practical Notes
Network
Most affordable smart devices operate on the 2.4 GHz band only. A router that forces band steering or does not label bands separately can prevent pairing. Verify band separation before purchasing sensors.
Regulation
Outdoor cameras capturing public space or a neighbour's property require notification and in some cases consent under Czech data protection law. Indoor cameras storing footage to cloud servers must comply with GDPR retention rules.
Infrastructure
Czech panel-era flats (panelák) often carry aluminium wiring rated below modern smart device aggregate draw. A qualified electrician assessment is advisable before adding several always-on hubs to an older distribution board.
